Internship Program Outline
1. Program Overview
The Tones Studios Internship Program is an unpaid, education-focused internship program for individuals interested in professional audio production, video production, live event production, and creative studio operations.
The program is designed for individuals located in the Greater Rochester area who want hands-on exposure to the day-to-day environment of a professional recording and creative production studio.
The program may be used to satisfy college, university, trade school, technical program, or other academic requirements when approved by the intern’s school or program.
Tones Studios may also consider non-student applicants who have a clear educational purpose, career-development goal, or documented learning objective. However, the program is not intended to function as ordinary employment, temporary staffing, or a trial period for a job.
2. Purpose of the Program
The purpose of the Tones Studios Internship Program is to provide meaningful educational exposure to the professional studio environment.
Interns may have opportunities to observe, assist, and learn in connection with:
Studio recording sessions;
Audio engineering and music production workflows;
Video production and live performance capture;
Live events, including Live at Tones, Open Mic events, and similar programming;
Studio operations, scheduling, client interaction, and preparation;
Equipment setup, organization, care, and breakdown;
Creative services and production support.
The program is intended to emphasize learning, professionalism, responsibility, service, and real-world execution.
3. Educational Nature of the Internship
The internship is designed primarily for the educational benefit of the intern.
Each accepted intern will have either:
An academic-credit requirement or school-approved internship requirement; or
A written educational purpose, learning objective, or career-development goal approved by Tones Studios.
The internship is not a promise of employment. Completion of the internship does not guarantee future employment, paid work, independent contractor opportunities, or continued studio access.
Tones Studios may benefit from having interns present in the studio environment, but the primary purpose of the program is educational exposure, training, observation, mentorship, and professional development.
4. Program Philosophy
Tones Studios believes meaningful creative work is learned through a combination of instruction, observation, repetition, humility, service, and real-world experience.
This internship is not designed as a classroom-only experience. Interns should expect to be present in active studio and event environments where clients, artists, engineers, producers, and creative professionals are working in real time.
Because studio work is often client-driven, schedules may vary from week to week. Interns should be prepared for a combination of fixed weekly availability, scheduled sessions, live events, and occasional short-notice learning opportunities.
5. Areas of Exposure
The internship will remain flexible rather than divided into rigid tracks. Depending on the intern’s interests, experience, availability, and Tones Studios’ current schedule, interns may receive exposure to one or more of the following areas.
Audio Production
Interns interested in audio production may gain exposure to:
Studio setup and breakdown;
Signal flow;
Microphone selection and placement;
Cable management;
Session preparation;
Session etiquette;
Recording workflows;
Editing and session cleanup;
File organization;
Preparing sessions for mixing.
Video Production
Interns interested in video production may gain exposure to:
Video shoot setup and breakdown;
Camera support;
Lighting support;
On-set audio/video production;
Live performance capture;
Multi-camera production environments;
Production logistics;
Basic media organization.
Live Events
Interns involved in live events may gain exposure to:
Event preparation;
Stage and room setup;
Audio/video support;
Multi-track recording;
Troubleshooting in real time;
Event execution under pressure;
Post-event breakdown and reset.
Studio Operations
Interns may also gain exposure to the operational side of the studio, including:
Studio readiness;
Client hospitality;
Scheduling awareness;
Communication expectations;
Equipment organization;
Studio cleanliness;
General professional standards.
6. Program Duration
The internship typically lasts 8 to 12 weeks, with a general target of approximately three months.
The exact duration may vary depending on:
The intern’s availability;
Academic program requirements;
Tones Studios’ current schedule;
The intern’s areas of interest;
The scope of the internship opportunity.
In some cases, an intern may be considered for an extended internship, apprenticeship, paid project work, or other future opportunity. Any such opportunity would be separate from the internship and would require separate approval by Tones Studios.
7. Time Commitment
Interns are generally expected to commit to at least 8 hours per week.
Depending on availability, academic requirements, and studio scheduling, some interns may participate up to approximately 12 hours per week or more when appropriate.
The schedule may include:
Fixed weekly hours;
Sessions scheduled one to two weeks in advance;
Event-based hours;
Occasional on-call or short-notice learning opportunities.
Because studio work depends heavily on client bookings and event schedules, flexibility is important.
8. Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Tones Studios Internship Program, applicants must:
Be at least 18 years old;
Be located in, or able to regularly travel to, the Greater Rochester area;
Submit a completed internship application;
Have a strong interest in audio production, video production, live events, or creative services;
Be able to meet the minimum weekly time commitment;
Be dependable, responsive, professional, and willing to learn;
Have either an academic-credit requirement, school-approved internship requirement, or other clear educational purpose approved by Tones Studios.
Applicants enrolled in a college, university, trade school, technical program, or other educational program are encouraged to apply.
9. Compensation
All internships through the Tones Studios Internship Program are unpaid.
The internship is designed to provide education, observation, mentoring, training, and practical exposure to the professional studio environment.
Interns are not entitled to wages, salary, stipends, benefits, or other compensation for participation in the internship program.
Where applicable, the program may be coordinated with an academic institution for credit or program satisfaction.
10. Learning Objectives
Although each internship may be tailored to the intern’s interests and Tones Studios’ needs, the general learning objectives include helping interns develop:
A basic understanding of professional studio workflow;
Familiarity with studio equipment, terminology, and session preparation;
Professional habits related to punctuality, communication, organization, and follow-through;
Awareness of how to interact with artists, clients, engineers, producers, and creative staff;
Practical exposure to real sessions, live events, and production environments;
A better understanding of possible career paths in audio, video, live event production, and creative services.
11. General Intern Responsibilities
Depending on the intern’s focus, responsibilities may include:
Assisting with session setup and breakdown;
Supporting engineers, producers, and creative staff during sessions;
Helping manage microphones, stands, cables, headphones, and other gear;
Assisting with video shoot setup, lighting, camera support, and production logistics;
Participating in live event setup, execution, and breakdown;
Helping maintain studio cleanliness and organization;
Observing and learning professional studio etiquette;
Communicating availability clearly;
Being dependable, proactive, and ready to help when appropriate.
Interns should understand that some tasks may be simple, repetitive, or service-oriented. These tasks are part of learning how a professional studio operates and how excellent creative environments are maintained.
Interns should also understand that they are not being brought into the program to displace employees, replace paid workers, or perform unsupervised staff functions.
12. Supervision
Each intern will be assigned a Tones Studios supervisor.
The supervisor may vary depending on the intern’s area of interest, the schedule, and the nature of the sessions or events involved.
The supervisor’s role may include:
Helping identify learning goals;
Communicating expectations;
Coordinating schedule and availability;
Providing instruction, feedback, and oversight;
Monitoring professionalism, attendance, and conduct;
Determining whether the internship should continue, be modified, or end.
13. Conduct and Professional Expectations
Selection for the Tones Studios Internship Program is a privilege. Interns are expected to conduct themselves professionally, respectfully, and maturely at all times.
Interns are expected to:
Arrive on time;
Dress in a manner that is clean, modest, professional, and appropriate for studio or event work;
Communicate clearly and respectfully;
Speak kindly of others;
Avoid gossip, eavesdropping, and unnecessary commentary about clients, artists, staff, or other interns;
Avoid unprofessional or foul language;
Avoid interrupting others;
Show interest in others;
Introduce themselves appropriately;
Look for opportunities to serve and help;
Respect the privacy and confidentiality of clients and studio projects;
Treat the facility, equipment, staff, artists, and clients with care.
Interns may not use alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, marijuana, or illegal drugs during internship hours, while on Tones Studios property, or while representing Tones Studios.
14. Availability and Communication Expectations
Interns are expected to maintain consistent weekly availability and communicate proactively.
Interns should:
Provide their general weekly availability;
Respond promptly to scheduling communications;
Be open to short-notice learning opportunities when possible;
Communicate conflicts as early as possible;
Follow through on accepted commitments;
Notify Tones Studios promptly if they are sick, delayed, or unable to attend a scheduled session or event.
Because Tones Studios works with real clients and live schedules, dependability is essential.
15. Studio Access Benefit
Accepted interns may receive access to Studio B for their own personal projects at no cost, subject to availability and prior approval by Tones Studios.
Studio B access is available only when:
The room is not booked for client work or studio operations;
Use has been approved in advance;
The intern uses the room respectfully;
The project does not interfere with Tones Studios’ business, clients, staff, or schedule;
The intern follows all studio policies for use, cleanup, equipment care, and conduct.
Interns may not bring outside artists, clients, friends, or guests into Studio B or any other Tones Studios space unless Tones Studios separately approves the use in advance.
This benefit is intended to help interns develop their own skills, build a portfolio, and gain practical experience. It is a privilege, not a right, and may be modified, limited, suspended, or revoked at any time.
16. Client and Paid Project Opportunities
Tones Studios encourages interns to be entrepreneurial and to develop their own creative relationships.
Interns may be permitted to bring in potential client opportunities or projects. When they do, they may have opportunities to:
Take on a larger creative or technical role;
Build their own portfolio;
Begin developing a client base within the Tones Studios environment;
Earn paid work on approved client sessions.
All client work must be approved by Tones Studios in advance.
All client work must be billed through Tones Studios.
Interns may not independently book, charge, invoice, collect payment, or provide client services using Tones Studios’ name, facility, equipment, personnel, or resources unless the project has been approved by Tones Studios and is handled through Tones Studios’ normal billing process.
Any approved paid client opportunity is separate from the unpaid internship program.
17. Confidentiality
Interns may be exposed to unreleased music, private recordings, client information, creative concepts, business information, pricing information, internal communications, and other confidential or sensitive information.
As a condition of acceptance into the program, interns will be required to sign an internship agreement that includes confidentiality obligations.
Interns must respect the privacy of Tones Studios, its clients, artists, staff, projects, and business operations.
18. Removal From Program
Tones Studios may end an internship at any time.
Reasons may include, but are not limited to:
Poor attendance;
Poor communication;
Unprofessional conduct;
Unsafe behavior;
Misuse of studio space or equipment;
Failure to follow instructions;
Breach of confidentiality;
Disrespect toward clients, artists, staff, or other interns;
Conduct inconsistent with Tones Studios’ standards, mission, or business needs.
Tones Studios may also modify or end an internship if studio scheduling, staffing, client needs, academic requirements, or other circumstances change.
19. Ideal Candidate
The ideal intern is someone who is:
Strongly interested in audio production, video production, live events, or creative services;
Reliable and responsive;
Comfortable with flexible scheduling;
Willing to learn in real-world environments;
Positive, humble, and team-oriented;
Professional around clients, artists, and staff;
Careful with equipment and studio spaces;
Able to take direction;
Proactive without being disruptive;
Entrepreneurial and interested in building future opportunities.
An interest in video production is a plus, but not required for all internship opportunities.
20. What Makes This Internship Different
The Tones Studios Internship Program is built around real studio life.
Interns may experience:
Real sessions with real clients;
Live events and live performance capture;
Professional audio and video production environments;
Exposure to both creative and operational sides of the studio;
Approved access to Studio B for personal projects;
Opportunities to bring in client opportunities that may lead to separately approved paid project work;
A practical focus on execution, service, and professionalism rather than theory alone.
21. Application and Selection Process
Prospective interns must submit a completed internship application.
Tones Studios may consider:
The applicant’s interests;
Availability;
Experience level;
Educational requirements;
Professionalism;
Communication;
Fit with current studio needs and opportunities.
Applicants may be asked to participate in an interview before being accepted.
Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed.
22. Completion of Internship
At the end of the internship, Tones Studios may provide a closing conversation or review with the intern.
This may include discussion of:
What the intern learned;
Areas of growth;
Strengths observed by the Tones Studios team;
Possible next steps;
Whether any extended internship, apprenticeship, paid project work, or future opportunity may be appropriate.
Completion of the internship does not guarantee future employment, paid work, independent contractor opportunities, or continued access to studio facilities.
